Acanthus mollis Tasmanian Angel - Bear's Breeches
The lobed, lustrous foliage of this new selection is splashed with cream and white, and because the leaves eventually attain bold proportions, Tasmanian Angel will draw plenty of attention to itself sited in a lightly shaded part of your garden. In late spring flowering stalks 2-3 feet high bear white and purplish pink flowers, the plant itself growing about 2 feet high and wide. Sublime! Z. 7-9

Photo of Acanthus spinosus Acanthus spinosus - Bear's Breeches
We love this stately perennial, which inspired the decoration on Greek Corinthian columns. Primarily a foliage plant, the rich green leaves are deeply divided and look fresh all season, even during warm, humid summers. In late spring long spikes of off-white flowers interspersed with purplish bracts arise from the basal foliage. It is easy to grow in full sun or part shade, but it must have sharp drainage to prosper. USDA Hardiness Zones (5)6-10

ACHRED 1.5-qt. pot - $7.95

Photo of Agapanthus 'Midnight Blue' Agapanthus 'Midnight Blue' - African Lily
Picture a lush mound of straplike foliage crowned in summer by sturdy scapes of blue flowers! Now you don't have to rush off to exotic ports of call to enjoy subtropical plants. African Lilies are easy to grow in the ground or in containers, in sun or light shade in light, well-drained soils. Keep them well watered during the growing season, but allow them to dry out while at rest. Mulch well in both summer and winter. If you grow them in containers, bring them in before cold weather and overwinter them near a north or east window in a cool room. 'Midnight Blue' has the added advantage of occasional rebloom in regions of mild autumn weather. The clumps may grow 2 feet high and wide, and the flowering scapes may reach 3 feet. 'Midnight Blue' is reputed to be somewhat hardier than most Agapanthus selections and thus extends the range for growing this valuable summer-blooming perennial. Z. (6)7-10
AGAMID 3-qt. pot - $12.95

Agapanthus praecox 'Two Times Blue' - African Lily

Bring the containers inside before cold weather and overwinter them near a north or east window in a cool room. The two cultivars we're offering may also be grown in the ground in warm-winter areas. Z. 8-10

In addition, new leaves in spring flush a dusky purple burgundy before turning green later in the season. Probably a hybrid of the Anise Hyssop (A. foeniculum), 'Black Adder' has the typical pungent foliage of this species. Grows 2-3 feet high and wide. Pinch it back early on to keep it more compact. Z. 6-9
