Mahonia bealii - Leatherleaf Mahonia

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has honored Mahonia bealii with its Gold Medal Plant Award, and we heartily concur, as this has always been one of our favorite evergreen shrubs for winter interest with its long compound evergreen leaves with spiny margins. In early winter erect flower clusters become visible, and lemon-yellow flowers with an old-rose fragrance have bloomed in our woodland garden as early as January and as late as early April, followed by powdery-blue fruits which are snatched almost immediately by birds. Grows slowly to 6-10 feet. Provide a shady site with some protection from winter sun and winds. Z. 6b-9
