Current Genus: Kalmia
Mountain Laurels - Kalmia latifolia
One of our finest native flowering shrubs, Kalmia is also one of the hardiest broadleaf evergreens. Blooming late May and through June, few other plants can match the elegance and sumptuousness of Kalmia at its peak of display. Even when not in bloom, Kalmia earns its keep with glossy evergreen leaves. The botanical name honors the Swedish explorer Peter Kalm, who botanized in eastern North America in the 18th century. Kalmia flowers most profusely in full sun or light shade but is tolerant of deep shade. It requires acid soil and a steady supply of moisture but is absolutely intolerant of poorly-drained conditions. On our flat ground we find it best to plant Kalmia shallowly so that the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the surrounding soil. A light mulch keeps the roots cool and moist. Kalmia grows slowly to 4-6 feet, perhaps greater with age. Z. 5-9
