Enkianthus is a small to medium shrub that grows erect and narrow, and it contrasts well with the more rounded habit of its cousins, Azaleas, Leucothoes, and Rhododendrons. Clusters of bellflowers, sometimes streaked with red, make their delicate appearance in late April. Fall foliage color is a brilliant red. Rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade suits this underused plant. Z. 5-8

Enkianthus campanulatus 'Showy Lantern'

On a visit a few years ago to eminent Connecticut plantsman Dr. Nickolas Nickou, it was love at first sight when he showed us this enchanting selection from Weston Nurseries. His plant was literally dripping with large solid pink flowers, and our own plant in the nursery, propagated from his, turns heads from quite a distance away. The brilliant red foliage in autumn, similar to the species, adds sparkle to the shrub border. Flowers opening in the shade are less brilliantly colored, so be sure to plant in full sun for best flower and foliage color.
