Current Genus: Daphniphyllum
Daphniphyllum macropodum - Daphniphyllum
One of the most handsome broadleaf evergreens for foliage effect, this shrub looks something like a large-leaved Rhododendron, but distinctive red leaf stalks and red new growth give Daphniphyllum macropodum a decidedly tropical appearance all year. Inconspicuous light green flowers in spring and small black fruits add seasonal interest. Heat tolerant and remarkably cold hardy, Daphniphyllum macropodum is a distinguished addition to a woodland garden despite its long botanical nomenclature and lack of a common name. It prospers in shade in moist, well-drained soil and can grow to 5-6 feet with equal spread, larger in the South. We had thought that it would require a protected site at the northern end of its range, but a customer who is gardening near the NJ/NY state line informed us that he is growing it on a windswept hill, and it has reached 6 feet in his Zone 6 location.
