Cephalanthus occidentalis Sputnik - Buttonbush

Long-stalked globes of fragrant small flowers resembling pincushions (or perhaps 1950's-era Soviet satellites) are quite ornamental, blooming in late summer, and are attractive to butterflies. The subsequent round seed heads are retained all winter, providing year-round interest. This shrub, which grows to 4-6 feet, also sports glossy summer foliage and prefers moist soil or even wet conditions. One of our handsomest native shrubs, Buttonbush is as attractive and fragrant as Summersweet (Clethra) in flower and as Fothergilla in fall foliage color. This selection from Oklahoma has a particularly long season of bloom. Z. 4b-9
