Current Genus: Aesculus
Aesculus parviflora - Bottlebrush Buckeye
A mature clump of Bottlebrush Buckeye 8-10 feet high with equal spread is a morning garden walk eye-opener! Beautiful palmate leaves on upright slender stems are interesting all season, turning yellow in fall. In summer cylindrical stalks of white flowers almost a foot long crown this remarkable southeastern native that is difficult to locate in commerce. Performs best in shade with room for expansion. This connoisseur's shrub has now been honored with both the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Plant Award and the Georgia Gold Medal. Z. 5-9
Aesculus x carnea 'Briotii' - Red Horse Chestnut
We've enjoyed this wonderful small tree in our garden for years, and we're happy to share a few plants of this classic nineteenth-century selection. Clusters of brilliant pink-and-yellow flowers cover the tree in May, but they're not in the least garish as they are beautifully set off by bold palmate foliage, which itself is attractive all season, unlike the foliage of some other tree-form Aesculus which begins fading by midsummer. 'Briotii' grows about 30 feet tall and blooms well even when grown in the shade of larger trees. Z. 4-7
