Acer 'Johin' - Red Full-Moon Maple
Actually a hybrid of Japanese and Full-Moon Maples, this unique new introduction has burgundy-plum-colored leaves with a distinct green vein down the middle of each lobe. Leaves are broad and rounded with deep lobes, thus intermediate between the two parents. While ultimate size is still unknown, it seems to be a fairly vigorous grower. Z. 5-8
Acer griseum - Paperbark Maple
A small Maple with remarkably beautiful cinnamon-colored bark that peels in thin papery sheets so that the trunk and branches are always decorated with curls of colorful separating bark. This exfoliation begins even on young trees so that the Paperbark Maple immediately displays a venerable air. The leaves, which occur in groups of three, often color a vibrant red and orange in fall and cast only light shade. This airiness and the tree's slow rate of growth to 20-30 feet make it an outstanding choice for planting near a patio or along a walkway. It is quite shade tolerant and, in fact, benefits from afternoon shade in hot-summer areas. Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal. Z. 5-8
Acer japonicum 'Green Cascade' - Weeping Full-Moon Maple
Here is a weeping form of Full-Moon Maple with deeply dissected leaves—a look-alike to the delicate threadleaf Japanese Maples. This selection can be allowed to cascade down a bank, or it can be staked to form a mound of ferny foliage several feet high. Fall color is a brilliant mix of yellow, orange, and red. Z. 5-8
Acer pensylvanicum - Striped Maple, Moosewood
Green young stems with conspicuous white stripes give this fine native Maple its common name. In nature it grows as a small understory tree, and in the garden it does require considerable shade and a cool, moist root run. The large leaves color a good yellow in fall. Z. 3-7
Acer tegmentosum 'Joe Witt' - Maple
A stunning understory tree, 'Joe Witt' is a selection with highly striped green and white bark that glows in the shade. The bold foliage is pale green, turning golden yellow in fall. It grows into a medium-sized tree with a broad, vase-like shape. Expect it to grow 15-20 feet tall and slightly less in width after 10 years. If you can't plant it in the shade of larger trees, consider growing this tree facing north or east because exposure to full sun may cause the bark to split. Provide fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil with occasional watering during summer dry spells. Z. 4-7
Japanese Maples - Acer palmatum
Handsome and intriguing leaf shapes, brilliant fall color, and interesting bark are the most obvious reasons for growing Japanese Maples. They run the gamut from dwarf shrubs barely a few feet high after many years, to small trees maturing at 25-30 feet. Japanese Maples prefer well-drained soil with uniform moisture. Compacted clay soil is not to their liking. Where to site a Japanese Maple should be determined not only by its ultimate size and function but its sun or shade requirements as well: Green-leaved cultivars are tolerant of sites in full sun, but most variegated and threadleaf varieties require shade from afternoon sun, especially in hot-summer areas. Red-leaved cultivars benefit from some shade but do need enough sun to develop their color. All cultivars Zones 5-8 except as noted.
Acer palmatum 'Atrolineare' - Japanese Maple
The lobes of this form are long and fine, and in spring blackish red leaves clothe this twiggy, upright-growing Japanese Maple to about 9 feet high. In summer the leaves take on greenish tones. 'Atrolineare' looks good with the more round-headed cultivars such as 'Red Pygmy' or 'Villa Taranto'.
Acer palmatum 'Beni Otake' - Japanese Maple
The Japanese cultivar name means 'Red Bamboo'. The deeply lobed red leaves grace this Japanese Maple with an upright growth habit to 6-10 feet.
Acer palmatum 'Iijima Sunago' - Japanese Maple
A rare selection that displays deep red leaves until the onset of hot weather, when the leaves turn a purplish brown. Tiny irregular green spots on the leaves are sunago-fu, which means "sand-sprinkled." This cultivar grows upright to 15-18 feet and forms a rounded canopy. The comparatively large, deeply lobed leaves bathed in rich colors create a wonderful effect in the garden!
Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' - Japanese Maple
With finely dissected foliage and a weeping growth habit, 'Orangeola' is a fine new introduction with orangish spring leaves that eventually turn green. In fall the leaves create a fiery display of bright reddish orange. Our high-grafted plants mature slowly to about 6 feet.
Acer palmatum 'Otto's Dissectum' - Japanese Maple
Finely dissected leaves are a bright orange-green, and fall brings brilliant reds and oranges. Where summers are hot, be sure to plant this broad, mounding Japanese Maple in partial shade. After 10 years it reaches about 3 feet high with a little greater spread.
Acer palmatum 'Peaches and Cream' - Japanese Maple
An Australian selection, this Japanese Maple will dazzle you in spring with the greenish cream color of the foliage accented with rosy red, and in fall with yellow to buff leaves with darker tips. Grows about 12-15 feet high. This Maple will make a scrumptious addition to your garden!
Very bushy plants.
Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' - Coral Bark Japanese Maple
This famous Maple makes a brilliant show in winter against newly-fallen snow with coral-red bark and twigs. In spring the red-tinged leaves soon turn light green, becoming yellow-gold in fall. Some gardeners prune back this Maple every spring to stimulate vigorous new growth, which has the most brightly colored bark; others, less daring, allow it to develop as an upright-growing tree to 18 feet.
Acer palmatum 'Scolopendrifolium' - Strapleaf Japanese Maple
Resembling a tiny palm frond, each leaf of this appealing selection is divided into five long, slender lobes. The bright green summer foliage turns yellow in fall, and this small tree grows rather upright to about 15 feet.
Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' - Japanese Maple
An appealing vintage Japanese Maple with stubby branches packed with crinkly green leaves resembling a lion's mane. In fall the leaves color a striking combination of gold, rose, and crimson. A beautiful specimen for your garden, 'Shishigashira' grows slowly to 6-9 feet and perhaps half as wide.
Acer palmatum 'Toyama Nishiki' - Japanese Maple
A stunning small Maple! The leaves of this cutleaf Japanese Maple are greenish red with a decorative overlay of all sorts of streaks and swirls in shades of pink and white. This slow-growing mounding form reaches about 4 feet tall and wide after 10 years. Morning sun will help develop the best coloration while afternoon shade is essential in maintaining the lighter colorations through hot summer months. Pinks and oranges are the fall colors.
Acer palmatum 'Villa Taranto' - Strapleaf Japanese Maple
Neither a red nor a green Japanese Maple, but both! Newly emerging red leaves create a haze of reddish color over the older leaves, which are bright green. The long, narrow lobes on the leaves of this European introduction create a lacy effect and allow both colors to work their magic in your garden. Forms an upright but rounded shrub of 6-8 feet.
