A cold-hardy member of the Ginger family, this plant resembles Hedychium in foliage—narrow, tapered leaves borne on stiff stems 2-3 feet high. In fall short stalks arise at soil level bearing delicate pale yellow flowers that are lightly scented and are considered a culinary delicacy in Japan.
