Current Genus: Asarum
Asarum canadense - Wild Ginger, Snakeroot
An attractive deciduous groundcover that spreads quickly but not aggressively, Wild Ginger has bold, iridiscent heart-shaped leaves that look tidy all season in the moist woodland garden. In early spring the small, oddly-shaped brownish-red flowers at soil level are curiosities not to be missed. The rootstocks and leaves of this plant have a ginger-like odor, and the roots were used medicinally and as a Ginger substitute. Z. 4-8
Asarum europaeum - European Wild Ginger
An attractive evergreen groundcover that spreads quickly but not aggressively, Wild Ginger has bold, iridiscent heart-shaped leaves that look tidy all season in the moist woodland garden. The polished kidney-shaped leaves of this Wild Ginger remain evergreen in most areas and make a handsome addition to the shade garden. Z. 4-7
