Deodar Cedars - Cedrus deodara
An extraordinarily graceful and majestic tree, Deodar Cedar is one of the best choices for a specimen Conifer. Layer upon layer of somewhat pendulous branches with silvery foliage always look cool in summer yet never fail to lift the spirits during the dankest days of winter. Full-sized cultivars can reach 30-40 feet fairly quickly, but dwarf cultivars are available if you don_t have space for tree forms. Deodar Cedars prosper in practically any well-drained, sunny location. They are notably tolerant of air pollution and appear not to be bothered by any serious pests. Z. 6-9
Cedrus deodara 'Feelin' Blue' - Prostrate Deodar Cedar
This selection is covered with lovely light blue foliage, and growth is so lax that it can even be used as a ground cover. Or you can stake it, as in our photo, to form an elegant weeping shrub or small tree. After ten years it can be maintained at only one foot tall while spreading to three feet.
Cedrus deodara 'Hollandia' - Dwarf Deodar Cedar
A slow-growing, conical, upright form with lovely gray-blue foliage that holds its color throughout the year. In 10 years it reaches only 3 feet tall.
Cedrus deodara 'Karl Fuchs' - Deodar Cedar
From high mountains south of Kabul in Afghanistan comes this selection which we believe will prove to be one of the hardiest as well as one of the most attractive Deodar Cedars. New growth emerges a striking bright blue before maturing to green, and as new growth appears in spring and for much of the summer, we are presented with a lovely shimmering effect much of the season. Though hardiness is still being tested, its provenance suggests that it should be fully hardy through Zone 6 and perhaps even colder. Z. 6-9
Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon' - Japanese Cedar
Japanese Cedars display thick, billowy foliage, and 'Black Dragon' is a striking irregularly pyramidal selection which grows ultimately to 10 feet in height and 4 to 6 feet wide. The foliage is an exceptionally dark black-green. In our experience, Japanese Cedars grow best in acid, moist soil with some protection from afternoon sun and winter winds. Z. 6-9
Cryptomeria japonica 'Gyokuryu' - Japanese Cedar
Japanese Cedar is a refined conifer with short, soft needles that invite tactile inspection. A softly mounded habit with apple-green needles gives 'Gyokuryu' an irregular globose silhouette in the garden. With age it develops a central leader, becoming broadly pryramidal, and grows 10-15 feet high, probably half as wide, over time. In our experience Japanese Cedars grow best in acid, moist soil with some protection from afternoon sun and winter winds. Z. 6-9
Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan Sugi' - Variegated Japanese Cedar
The exquisite foliage of this large, pyramidal shrub or small tree emerges a colorful creamy yellow in spring before fading to deep green with the onset of hot weather. A distinctive accent plant for the garden, 'Sekkan Sugi' grows to about 20 feet in 10 years. Z. 6-9
Specimen Plants, grown in 3-gallon pots.
